The sand equivalent value is an important parameter used to evaluate the cleanliness and clay content of fine aggregates, such as natural sands and crushed rock fines. It provides an indication of the aggregate’s potential to contribute to undesirable effects, such as increased water demand or decreased workability of concrete mixtures.

The motorized Sand Equivalent Shaker consists of a specially designed mechanical platform that holds and shakes two cylinders simultaneously.

Each cylinder contains a representative sample of the fine aggregate mixed with a flocculant solution. The shaking action of the shaker causes the particles to stratify according to their sizes and densities. As a result, the cleaner sand particles settle at the bottom of the cylinder, while the finer clay particles and impurities rise to the top.

After a specified duration of shaking, the technician compares the height of the settled sand to the total height of the sand and clay mixture. This ratio, expressed as a percentage, represents the sand equivalent value. A higher sand equivalent value indicates a lower clay and impurity content, signifying a cleaner and more desirable fine aggregate.
